Teatro Costanzi has always had costume makers right from the start, but often has often sought help from outside in creating costumes: one should remember the Casa d'Arte Caramba (nickname of founder and proprietor Luigi Sapeffi) who worked with the most important Italian theatres and foreigners (Scala, Fenice, Regio di Torino, Opera di Roma, Metropolitan di New York).
A real tailors service, as it still is today structured for the packing and maintenance, it only started to take shape after the transformation of the Teatro reale dell'Opera as an independant body after 1942.
The costume makers of the Teatro dell'Opera are proud to be known as one of the strongest traditions in Italy
Completley hand made, with a system of artistic workmanship of extremely high levels for both ballets and operas during the season.
Strong in varied richness, jealously kept at the strorage in via dei Cerchi, where over sixty thousand costumes are kept, the tayloring activity (through workmanship on materials by colouring, making jewellery and sewing on to the materials) expresses a free creativity pleasing not just hosting stars but also costume designers.
A rich workmanship which is appreciated not only in Italy but also exported throughout the world.
